The site-specific video-installation 'inside outside' was created for our laureates show 'About Waves and Structure. Behaviour, Disagreement, Confidence and Pleasure.' at the postgraduate school HISK, Ghent, Belgium. (curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen)
About the work
The video '18/09/2012' which I made in 'Art Exchange gallery', University of Essex, as part of the exhibition 'Graphology' is presented here in a new context and combined with new elements.
The installation 'Inside Outside' operates 2 visions facing each other, through projections and drawings:
- The vision of the architect H. Van de Velde who has chosen to plant the University right in the middle of the city
- And the vision of the University of Essex (Colchester, UK) where they choosed to build the University in the middle of nature.
I draw on windows with window wipers and brushes, tinted oil or soap.
Some parts get opaque and mask te view behind. At the same time via transparant spots the reality in the background still plays a role. The 'dirty stains' block the view. The window has lost its function.
If we look we also have blind spots in our perception. The place where we were born, but also the architecture itself determines our way of seeing.
For this work I builded the architecture with a door and the windows itself. Unlike my usual way of working, everything was staged and determined. External factors were eliminated and a world on its own was made. Through projections and drawings on the detachable windows (via performances) I looked from my observation post to the surrounding area.
